The AI Gap Isn’t Waiting for You to Catch Up

A global AI readiness survey from AICPA & CIMA, released this year, found that early adopters are gaining competitive advantage while also taking AI risk more seriously than everyone else. Read that twice — the leaders aren’t the ones moving fastest and loosest. They’re the ones building capability deliberately and treating the risk side like it matters.

Then there’s the regional number that should sting a little: only about 19% of North American respondents work at what the survey calls “AI-transformed” organizations, versus 37% in South Africa and Southeast Asia. North America — the place most of us assume is running the AI conversation — is behind on this specific measure.

Here’s why that gap doesn’t just persist, it compounds. Every month a team operates without real AI-assisted workflows isn’t a neutral month. It’s a month competitors spend training on better data, refining processes, building institutional fluency that doesn’t transfer from a weekend course. That’s not a speed advantage. It’s a compounding one — closer to interest than to a head start.

I started using ChatGPT years before it was mainstream, not because I had special insight, but because the wave looked likely and I wanted a head start on it — though I didn’t expect it to arrive this fast. That early window is what let me pair it with an early version of Copilot to build and deploy seven Copilot agents, and later bring in Claude to build six data analysis skills with automation. None of that happened overnight, and none of it would exist if I’d waited for the “right time” to start.

If you’re just getting started with AI now, that’s not a failure. But it does mean you’re behind the curve — not behind the people who started, behind the compounding they’ve already banked. The only way to close a compounding gap is to start compounding yourself, today, on something real.

So what — is your organization closer to the 19% or the 37%, and do you actually know? Now what — what’s the one workflow you could start compounding on this month, instead of next quarter?
