What
Xometry surveyed 150 manufacturing executives for its 2027 outlook. 57% report significant returns from AI investments, up from 44% a year earlier. Just over half expect their biggest AI impact in 2027 upstream, in manufacturability and costing. 47% pick quality and inspection, and 32% pick production execution on the floor. Xometry also notes that much of the reported return comes from general-purpose tools that aren’t grounded in real pricing, capacity or production data.
So What
Returns are rising, but they’re self-reported, and they’re clustering where the data sits closest to the desk: quoting, costing, planning. The floor is harder, because the AI needs your actual data, your actual constraints and your actual process.
Now What
When someone says AI is “paying off,” ask three questions. What was the baseline? Who measured the change? Is the tool working from your data or generic knowledge? A return you can’t trace to a baseline is a feeling. A return grounded in your own data is the one worth scaling.
